Step-by-Step Pooja Vidhi for Maha Shivratri Pooja

Follow these steps in order for a complete and proper pooja.

Wake Up Early & Take Bath

Wake up before sunrise, take a holy bath (preferably with Gangajal mixed water), and wear clean white or saffron clothes.

Observe Fast (Vrat)

Observe a day-long fast. Some devotees take only fruits and milk (phalahar), while others observe nirjala (without water) fast.

Visit Shiva Temple or Set Up at Home

Visit the nearest Shiva temple or set up a Shivling at home on a clean platform with a water outlet.

Perform Rudrabhishekam

Perform Abhishekam on the Shivling with: water, milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar, bilva leaves, and bhasma. Each item has specific significance.

Offer bilva (bael) leaves on the Shivling. Offering 3, 5, or 11 bilva leaves is considered highly auspicious.
